The U.S. DOT is giving the Port of Long Beach $14.5 million, which will go towards the Terminal Island Wye Track Realignment railroad project.

When the project is complete trains will be able to move faster in and out of the port and will be able to operate more efficiently. Locomotive idling also will be reduced and safety will be improved. Feeling the benefits of a more efficient operation will be Terminal Island at Pier T. Terminal Island is the port’s largest container terminal.

Work will include constructing new tracks and improving a triangular rail junction where long trains can be turned and staged.

The project, which will cost $40 million, is set to start in mid-2021 and is expected to be complete by early 2023. The port will provide $25 million.

“We’re so pleased to see the U.S. Department of Transportation support this important project,” said Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach. “This will help move cargo more efficiently through the port, which in turn supports jobs across the United States.”
