Sound Transit digs into Redmond Link extension

The state of Washington’s Sound Transit continues to hold its momentum. Officials cut the ribbon on a $1.53 billion Redmond Link light rail extension in Redmond, Wash., on Oct. 23.
Light rail operations between downtown Seattle and the Redmond Technology station on Microsoft’s campus will begin in 2023, with the Redmond Link becoming operational a year later. Sound Transit believes as many as 52,000 riders will use the light rail link daily by 2026. It will take just 18 minutes for travelers from Redmond to reach downtown Bellevue, Wash. A trip to Seattle’s International District will take 38 minutes.
In July Sound Transit awarded a $729 million contract for final design and construction of the light rail extension to joint venture Max J. Kuney Company and Stacy and Witbeck. The joint venture is working on extending light rail 3.4 miles and building two stations north of Microsoft. Max Kuney, president of Max J. Kuney Company, says he passed on other projects to win the bid on the Redmond light rail extension, which is the largest such endeavor in company history.
