Eleven Hopedale residents have managed to put a land agreement with a short line railroader on pause.

It’s only fitting that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is now putting a bow on 2019 by handing out grants to railroad companies across the state. A total of 26 rail projects will help improve about 5,600 miles of track.

One of the biggest winners is Pittsburgh Terminals Inc., which will receive $700,000 to upgrade around a mile of freight rail track. Work will consist of the replacement of ties and switch timbers, as well as new ballast and surfacing.

Allegheny Valley Railroad will receive $2.5 million to fix a bridge that is used by three railroads in Allegheny County. ATI Flat Rolled Products Holdings will construct 2 miles of track behind a $2 million grant. TMS International will get $700,000 to improve and construct about a half-mile of track and to increase storage capacity. U.S. Steel Corp. will receive just under $700,000 to handle business from a new USS hot-rolling mill in Braddock. The money will be used for track upgrades. Union Railroad Co. will take in just under $460,000 in new funds to construct new track and a new turnout on an East Pittsburgh viaduct serving another new hot-rolling mill. Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad is getting just under $400,000 to replace bridge deck timbers on the McKees Rocks Bridge.
