Railroad bridge in Houston partially collapses, derailing train

Written by RT&S Staff

A railroad bridge has partially collapsed in northeast Houston this morning, causing a train to derail.

Union Pacific says it was executing switching operations when the span failed around 1 a.m. this morning. At this time there is no explanation as to what caused the accident. Union Pacific has two giant excavators on the scene attempting to place the derailed cars back on the tracks, and officials do not know when service will be restored. Both sides of Wayside Drive at Liberty Road have been closed.

Union Pacific has confirmed there were cars that can carry hazardous materials on the line, but those cars were empty.
