Sound Transit is getting ready to show its presence in a big way on the I-5 freeway. Next weekend a portion of the freeway will close as the bridge holding the Lynnwood extension will begin its construction journey over lanes of traffic.

The light-rail extension that will connect Lynnwood to Northgate runs along the east side of I-5 all the way to the Snohomish County line. The Lynnwood station is located on the west side. The light-rail tracks cross I-5 just north of the transit center in Mountlake Terrace.

Southbound lanes of I-5 will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights next weekend to install falsework for the light-rail bridge. Southbound commuters will be moving underneath the falsework during construction. In early 2021, the same protocol will be followed on the northbound lanes.

Construction of the Lynnwood-to-Northgate extension is about 20 percent complete, and the line is expected to open in 2024.
