A hole-in-one in golf is usually an once-in-a-lifetime event. So is a sinkhole that leaves railroad tracks suspended in mid air.
It happened on the 13th hole at the TPC golf course in Cromwell, Conn., after remnants of Hurricane Ida ripped through the East Coast and dropped a record amount of rainfall. The washout created a sinkhole. A refined products pipeline also was exposed.
The Providence and Worcester Railroad Co. owns the line. Back in June, heavy rain washed away some of the ballast for the tracks. Residents said the event left one side of the tracks suspended, and railroad crews took care of the repair.
After the most recent storm damage, Providence and Worcester Railroad Co. was quick to respond and said a contractor is expected to make the necessary repairs next week. The short-liner will use alternate routes to serve customers.
