Just over two weeks after Hurricane Laura hit, the Gulf Coast is bracing for another storm that is expected to become a hurricane today (likely Category 2), and is expected to make landfall on the central Gulf Coast Tuesday morning. The New York Times is reporting that New Orleans could see 100 mph winds, and the hurricane is expected to bring six to 12 inches of rain to the central Gulf Coast.

Norfolk Southern has issued a service alert to customers, reproduced below:

Norfolk Southern Service Alert

“Tropical Storm Sally is moving across southern Florida and will move into the Gulf of Mexico later today. It is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before landfall over the southeastern coast of Louisiana or southern Mississippi on Tuesday.

“The Flood Protection Authority advised Norfolk Southern the floodgates that impede the flow of NS rail traffic into and out of New Orleans will close at noon Monday, Sept. 14. NS will work with our foreign line partners on possible alternate routing, but customers should expect delays to their traffic until this system passes. NS will continue to provide updates as conditions change.”

RT&S will continue to monitor this story and file reports as warranted.
