Double-track project in Indiana will generate $2 billion in private investment

The double track project in Michigan City should wrap up in the next few weeks.

Northwest Indiana residents got an update on a double track project that will run between Gary and Michigan City, Ind.

The $420.3 million effort will include higher-speed trains that will reduce the commute time between Chicago and Michigan City to almost one hour. Work is expected to begin next year.

Michigan City also wants to establish quiet zones, so a number of grade crossings will be closed. Train speeds also will be increased by eliminating some stations. Four new bridges also will be built along the double-track corridor. High-level platforms at the stations will be constructed to allow passengers to board and de-board much quicker.

Economically, the double track project is expected to help generate $2 billion in private investment along the lines over the next two decades. The double track job will produce 1,000 jobs, and transit development within a mile of the route will create as many as 7,000 jobs over the next 20 years.
