Special T&I panel releases report on improving U.S. freight transportation

The Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation, led by the panel’s Chairman, U.S. Rep. John Duncan, Jr. (R-TN) and Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), released its final report on the current state of freight transportation in the United States and its recommendations for freight transportation improvements to strengthen the U.S. economy.

Port of Oswego receives additional funds for rail spur

The Port of Oswego Authority in New York received a $192,000 grant, awarded through the Northern Border Regional Commission, which will be used to construct a rail spur and additional rail car storage to help accommodate the demands of increased rail traffic.

INDR and CN open Senate Avenue Intermodal Terminal

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and Indiana Rail Road Company (INRD) President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Hoback opened Indianapolis’ new intermodal freight terminal October 10 by driving a 200-ton INRD locomotive through a ribbon.

BNSF opens new Kansas City intermodal facility

BNSF opened its new Logistics Park Kansas City (LPKC) Intermodal Facility in Edgerton, Kan., to customers, business and elected officials October 17.

CSX to build new intermodal facility

CSX and its transportation and intermodal terminals subsidiaries plan to design and build a new intermodal facility in McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, Pa., near Pittsburgh.

South Carolina Ports Authority Oks additional funding for Inland Port completion

To facilitate completion of the South Carolina Ports Authority (SPCA) inland port terminal in Greer, S.C., the board approved $2.7 million in funding to cover unforeseen weather and topography challenges from site construction. Previously, the board approved $41.2 million for the project as part of a $1.3-billion 10-year SCPA capital plan for new and existing port facilities.

Florida commits $35 million to three port projects

Florida has made a commitment of nearly $35 million for strategic port projects across the state that will be recommended for the upcoming legislative session.The additional investments will be included in the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Work Program.

FEC rail facility at Port Everglades begins to take shape

Construction is moving swiftly as Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) moves forward on a $53 million, 42.5-acre intermodal container transfer facility (ICTF) at Port Everglades that will be used to transfer domestic and international shipping containers between ship and rail beginning in mid 2014.

Port of Vancouver USA begins next phase of rail entrance project

On July 29, 2013, Port of Vancouver USA in the state of Washington began phase two construction of a rail entrance project. This included the construction of a piling-supported, watertight trench that will support the new grade separated rail entrance into the port.

NS marks 50th anniversary of Pier 6

On September 18, Norfolk Southern commemorated the 50th anniversary of the original dedication of Pier 6, its coal transloading facility in Norfolk, Va., with a ceremony at Lamberts Point, where the railroad has been transferring coal directly from rail cars to ships for export for 130 years.

TIGER V grants $474 million to 52 projects in 37 states

Fifty-two transportation projects in 37 states will receive a total of approximately $474 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program. Among these, $146 million will help fund rail projects.
