NEW YORK – It is generally agreed that one of the major indignities hurled at railroad history and American architectural history is the destruction of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Pennsylvania Station in 1963.
For the past several decades, Penn Station in New York has been functional, but that’s about it. Given the importance of the station in the life of the city and the Northeast Corridor, the now mostly underground facility, once considered among the grandest buildings in New York, looks more like a regional airport than a classic passenger rail terminal.
