The first full day of Railway Interchange 2023 kicked off on Monday, October 2nd, and it was a busy one. In the opening general session, which began at 7:30am local time, Trent Hudak, the previous president of AREMA who served from 2022 to 2023, addressed AREMA members in the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center to offer a few words of welcome before awards were presented for the Dr. William W. Hay Award for (Engineering) Excellence and for RT&S’ Engineer of the Year Award.

As detailed in a previous story, the Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence was awarded to the engineers who worked on the Merchants Bridge Main Span Trusses & East Approach Replacement. Soon after, RT&S Editor-in-Chief David C. Lester took the stage to introduce Brent Laing, Vice President of Engineering at Canadian National and presented the award for RT&S’ Engineer of the Year for 2023. In our September issue, RT&S featured Brent Laing on the cover and a 5-page article covering Laing’s background in the rail industry.

As well, during the opening session, it was announced that technical sessions will be available on demand for AREMA members.

Just before the exhibit halls opened, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing–Merchandise, ECP, Transload and Business Development Canadian Pacific Kanas City Coby Bullard gave the keynote speech in the Sagamore Ballroom of the Indiana Convention Center.

In the afternoon, the exhibit halls opened, and REMSA, RSI, and RSSI booths began to see traffic. The expansive room allowed for companies to showcase their products and services, and even some vendors had incredibly large machinery to show. For the first day, the exhibit halls were open until 6:00pm, which turned out to be plenty of time to grab a drink, network, and see what new innovations companies had to offer.
