Boston – A MDOT press release details infrastructure improvements and travel impact this summer during scheduled Sumner Tunnel closure.

The Sumner Tunnel in Boston will be closed July 5th to August 31st of this year as tunnel undergoes work as part of the Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project. For passengers who regularly travel and commute, there are:

  • free trips on the MBTA Blue Line
  • Free and reduced cost ferries including the East Boston Ferry and a new line between Lynn and Central Wharf
  • Reduced commuter rail fares
  • Reduced parking costs
  • Discounted tolls
  • More options for those going to and from the Logan Airport

More detailed discounts can be found on the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s website.

Transportation Secretary and CEO Gina Fiandaca said of the closure that there will be a “daily impact”, but that “the Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project is a crucial investment in transportation infrastructure in the Commonwealth, and we are working hard to provide as many mitigation measures as possible to those impacted.”

The project is estimated to be an $160 million investment and focuses on renovating the tunnel ceiling and overhead arch, replacing the tunnel deck and roadway surface, repairing walls, and includes the installation of fireproof panels, LED lights, new utility conduits and cables with updates to the CCTV and fire alarm systems and new equipment to lower effects of pollution.

The MDOT will close the Sumner Tunnel once more next year during the Summer months for additional work on the project.
