Fourteen Ohio crossings to get safety upgrades

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway to install safety upgrades, including flashing lights and gates at fourteen highway-rail grade crossings in Canton, Ohio.

Upgrades will be made to the following crossings:

• 12th Street NE

• 2nd Street NE

• 2nd Street SE

• 3rd Street NE

• 3rd Street SE

• 4th Street NE

• 4th Street SE

• 5th Street NE

• 6th Street NE

• 7th Street NE

• 8th Street NE

• Cleveland Avenue SE

• Madison Street SE

• Tuscarawas Street

The railroad is directed to complete construction of the upgrades by February 17, 2014. Funding for these upgrades will be provided by federal funds.

To increase public safety during the construction of the project, PUCO will assist the local government with the cost of improvements, such as rumble strips, illumination, improved signage or other safety enhancements at the project location. Funding for the improvements will come from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund and will not exceed $5,000.
