MBTA Completes Green Line C Branch Work

BOSTON - The MBTA completed infrastructure improvements along the Green Line C branch.
According to the MBTA, the improvements also include the installation of the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) at several stops along the C branch. This work comes as part of the C Branch Accessibility Improvements Project. This project seeks to make accessibility improvements on the oldest light rail subway line, bringing it into ADA compliance with accessible station platforms that are raised eight inches above the top of the rail. This also includes sloped walkways and better lighting for easier and safer navigation. The project’s design-build is projected to be complete by spring 2027.
Crews worked to install GLTPS infrastructure along street level tracks between Kenmore and Cleveland Circle and within Reservoir Yard. This infrastructure includes power cable, messenger cable, and GLTPS anchors. A service outage allowed crews unencumbered access to complete the improvements. At Englewood Avenue (outbound) and Tappan Street (outbound), Green Line trains will bypass these until July 10 and Tappan Street (inbound) until June 12 to allow further work to take place.
Elsewhere on the Green Line, MBTA’s MoW team finished track work at Ayr Road near Cleveland Circle and at the crossover track near Coolidge Corner, says the MTBA. Its Transit Facility and Maintenance Team made repairs to concrete, replaced yellow tactile edging, and replaced fencing areas at Cleveland Circle, Coolidge Corner, and Washington Square. Additionally, crews completed work throughout the suspension area in preparation for the upcoming new fleet of Type 10 Green Line vehicles. Within Reservoir Yard, crews completed necessary power maintenance and revitalization work. Nearby, crews performed paving work at track crossings in the Cleveland Circle area.
Interim Secretary and General Manager Phillip Eng said, “We made a commitment to the public to implement an additional layer of safety with the new Green Line Train Protection System; work that had been delayed for far too long prior to this administration. Not only did we complete the installation along the C Branch track infrastructure as part of this most recent diversion but we delivered critical accessibility upgrades at street-level stops to allow all that want and need to use transit, the ability to do so. . . The work accomplished on the C branch this month is another step closer to a modernized transit system. Thank you to the MBTA team for their determination and to our riders for their continued patience while we accomplished this critical work.”
