Monday, November 08, 2010

Work will continue this week on the new pedestrian underpass at the Santa Clara station. The underpass will connect the north- and southbound platforms, allowing two trains to pass through the station at the same time and improving safety for pedestrians in the station.

Passengers at the station are boarding the train from a temporary platform. The temporary platform will be in use for approximately six months. Scheduled train stops at the station will not be affected by the construction. Tickets can still be purchased at the existing ticket vending machines.

The work is part of an 18-month station improvement project that will add a new wider, longer center-boarding platform and extend the southern platform 150 feet.

Construction on a VTA project that will improve safety at eight grade crossings in Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Palo Alto continues. Nov. 7-11 between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., crews will work and at the Castro Street and Rengstorff Avenue crossings in Mountain View.

Nov. 8-12, crews will replace switch timbers in the San Francisco train yard and Caltrain will use an on-track truck to spray weed killer along the right-of-way. Also, crews will weld on the tracks between the Millbrae and Belmont stations.

Nov. 7-11, crews will replace crossties between the Hillsdale and Atherton stations. On Nov. 7, crews welded on the tracks between the Santa Clara and San Jose stations. Nov. 7-10, crews will work on signal house wiring modifications near the San Jose Diridon station.
