TriMet's MAX Green Line in Portland, Ore., turned one on September 12, with 6.1 million trips taken on the line during its first year. The Green Line is the agency's fifth MAX line to be built, and added a new alignment in downtown Portland along the Portland Transit Mall and new tracks between Gateway Transit Center and Clackamas Town Center.

Green Line highlights from the year:

* Weekday boardings high mark was 20,700 in July, with an average for the year around 19,000 trips per day.

* Weekend boardings high mark was 29,400 in June, with a weekend average for the year at 24,300.                                                                    

* Weekly boardings averaged 118,000 trips.

* 20 new MAX stations, bringing the total to 84 MAX stations throughout the 52-mile system.

* 5 new Park & Rides with a total of 2,300 parking spaces

* Bike access along the I-205 Multi-Use Path was improved with access to the MAX stations, connections and additional lighting. Bike parking along the Green Line totals 330 spaces with plans to add another 160 in downtown Portland.

The 8.3-mile line cost $575.7 million and was built on time and on budget, with 60 percent of the funding coming from the federal government, and the balance funded by state and local partners.

"The Green Line extension was the project that finally linked the three counties in our region by light rail and helped people make transit connections throughout our community," said TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane.

In addition to the MAX line, TriMet also opened its fourth Transit Police Division Precinct at the terminus of the line at Clackamas Town Center Park & Ride garage. The South Precinct opened two days before the Green Line opened in 2009.
