NEW YORK CITY - The Grand Central Madison passenger rail project won the 2025 American Society of Civil Engineering's Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (ASCE OCEA) award.
According to the release from STV, the project was selected as one of 14 finalists for the award. It expands the MTA’s LIRR capacity into Manhattan’s East Side. This expansion improves commute time by up to 40 minutes and increases train capacity by 50%.
STV and joint venture partners provided “tunnel engineering, environmental engineering and final design services for the terminal and 350,000-square-foot concourse carved 140 feet below Madison Avenue.” Since its opening in January 2023, it can accommodate 24 trains per hour with a 40% increase in LIRR service.
The project also won the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) 2024 Prix Versailles Interior Award for World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Station. Additionally, the project garnered the 2024 Empire Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York and the 2024 Outstanding Project of the Year from the New York State Society of Professional Engineers.
In October 2025, the project will be honored at an awards gala. Here, it is also eligible to win ASCE’s OPAL award, which is the organization’s highest honor.
