SEATTLE - Sound Transit began testing Sept. 8 with its first powered light rail vehicle crossing the I-90 floating bridge.

On Monday, Sound Transit says the first Link light rail vehicle crossed the Homer M. Hadley bridge “under its own power.” This is reportedly the first time trains under power have operated across a floating bridge. The single train crossed the bridge multiple times “at increasing speeds, from approximately five miles per hour up to the full operating speed at 55 mph.”
Overnight, crews observed the train’s speed as well as the electrical arcing between the overhead power wires and the LRV. Over the next several months, Sound Transit says the system integration testing program will be completed. Below is a series of videos from Sound Transit showing the LRV testing over the I-90 floating bridge. Additional images of the overnight testing can also be found at Sound Transit’s website.
