LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) awarded the Phase 1 preconstruction services contract for the Link Union Station Project Phase A to FlatironDragados.

According to the release, Herzog is serving as the track subcontractor. The project seeks to change Union Station in Los Angeles to a “modern ‘run-through’ station.” Phase A of the project includes construction a run-through viaduct structure that will extend from the station and over the US-101 freeway. Additionally, the release states the structure will have two new run-through tracks. The preconstruction phase will continue through May 2027. In summer 2026, Early Work Packages (EWP) will begin.

Herzog says it will assist with preconstruction services via “track and signal phasing and sequencing optimizations, constructibility reviews, value engineering, and coordinating work with Metrolink, Amtrak, and BNSF.” When the project enters Phase 2, Herzog says it will work to relocate and reconfigure the existing track located on the west side of the L.A. River. This will allow for viaduct construction access. After, Herzog will construct two tracks on the structure in order to “establish a fully functioning run-through track configuration.”

The Link Union Station Project includes the construction of sound walls and retaining walls and grade crossing improvements. The project seeks to improve service frequency and capacity with reduced wait times for passengers. Revenue service is slated for 2031.
