BALTIMORE - The U.S. Green Building Council awarded LEED Silver certification to the Purple Line Operations and Maintenance Facility.

According to the release, the certification recognizes the facility’s adherence to “high-performance standards in energy efficiency, water conservation, and environmental stewardship.” Located in Glenridge, Maryland, the facility is a central location for the Purple Line fleet’s maintenance, inspection, and servicing. The certification from the U.S. Green Building Council recognizes the MTA’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Such sustainability features of the facility include solar-reflective roofing and low-mercury lighting that contributes to reducing energy and consumption scores. Low-flow fixtures and a specialized reclaimed-water system in the wash bay leads to less potable water use. More than 75% of specialized waste during construction was diverted from landfills. Additionally, the facility has recycled content in its structural steel and concrete. The facility is located near the new Carrollton transit hub, and it promotes commuting with bike storage, charging stations for electric vehicles, and access to multi-modal transit options.

MTA Senior Project Director for the Purple Line Ray Biggs II said, “Earning LEED Silver certification is a gratifying accomplishment for the Purple Line project. . . This facility demonstrates how thoughtful design and sustainable building practice can support transit operations while reducing our environmental footprint.”

Purple Line Transit Partners CEO Doran Basso added, “We’re honored to receive LEED certification. . . Working in close partnership with the Maryland Transit Administration, Maryland Transit Solutions and Purple Line Transit Operators, we designed, built, and are now utilizing a facility that meets or exceeds some of the world’s highest building standards for environmental quality.”
