BNSF Installs New Chief Operations Officer
Written by David C. Lester, Editor-in-Chief
FORT WORTH, Texas –– BNSF announced this week that Craig Morehouse has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operations officer.
Morehouse succeeds Matt Garland in this role, as Garland, who had been with BNSF for over two decades, and moved into the top operations role at the railroad in January 2026, recently resigned to pursue another opportunity. BNSF CEO Katie Farmer said “We thank Matt for his leadership and contributions to BNSF over the course of his career.”
Morehouse has also had a long career with BNSF, joining the railroad in 2006. Morehouse holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Michigan Tech. After joining BNSF as a management trainee, he pursued positions of increasing responsibility within the engineering group, then became general director of transportation for BNSF’s Twin Cities Division. From there, he served in several operations positions, the last one as senior vice president, network operations and design.
Discussing Morehouse’s background, Farmer said “Craig’s proven leadership, experience, and firsthand knowledge of our network position BNSF to achieve operational excellence. Under his leadership, we will continue building a more agile, resilient railroad that delivers exceptional value for our customers.”
Morehouse will be responsible for the entirety of BNSF’s operating department, which includes mechanical, engineering, transportation, resource protection, environmental activities, operations support, and service design, along with safety and training.
