CSX’s Magnetic Particle Testing Helps Identify Issues

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - CSX detailed the work it is doing with magnetic particle testing in conjunction with visual inspections to increase safety.
The Class I says the process begins with a visual inspection before energizing the area with an electromagnet. Inspectors apply iron particles to the surface. The reason being that these particles will collect along a defect, such as a crack, and make it easier to spot. This is one method CSX mechanical teams use to spot issues.
“Visual inspections remain the foundation of railcar safety, and our car inspectors rely on their training and experience every day in the field,” said Rob DeWitt, senior mechanical manager. “That work is reinforced by advanced inspection technology across the railroad, including more than 1,000 wayside detectors that monitor bearing and wheel temperatures as cars move through the network.”
In the video below, DeWitt demonstrates the use of magnetic particle testing.
