SAN FRANCISCO – BART celebrates more than 180 engineers during Engineers Week and the numerous projects they’ve worked on over the last year.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) celebrated Engineers Week by shining a spotlight on the engineers at BART. With more than 180 engineers at the agency, they are spread out over a number of disciplines, “from structures and electrical to traction power and computer systems (to name just a few).”

Some of the projects BART’s engineers have worked on include the Next Generation Fare Gates (wherein they replaced 20-year-old fare gates systemwide), Communications-Based Train Control (replaced the signaling system), Rail Inspection Vehicle (acquired a geometry car with advanced track inspection capabilities), the Transbay Tube Seismic Retrofit (installed steel liner plates and a new water pumping system), and the 34.5kV Cable Replacement (inspected and replaced 34.5kV cables along the M-Line and R-Line).

General Manager Bob Powers said, “As a Professional Engineer myself, I am routinely impressed and inspired by BART’s engineers. . . I thank each and every one of them for their ongoing work to imagine and implement projects that improve and advance our system.”

Assistant General Manager of the Office of Infrastructure Delivery, Sylvia Lamb, said, “BART engineers are some of the most hardworking, knowledgeable, and creative in the business, and they ensure we are honoring our commitment to riders to provide safe, clean, and reliable train service. . . Our engineers are also working tirelessly to develop opportunities for innovation and the utilization of cutting-edge technology so that we may honor this commitment for years to come.”
