LOS ANGELES - AECOM was selected to advance the final design of Phase 2 of the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project.

According to the press release, AECOM is now the San Fernando Transit Contractors’ Lead Designer for Phase 2 of LA County Metro’s project. The project includes light rail tracks spanning 6.7 miles and 11 stations. The goal of the project is to “create a more efficient and reliable transit service in the San Fernando Valley area.” Scheduled for service in 2031, the $3.57 billion East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Project will be built on Van Nuys Boulevard and provide a light rail alternative for nearby residents.

In this role, AECOM will provide services to “manage the design integration for multiple facilities.” The release goes on to state the elements will be designed in 3D using Building Information Modeling, or BIM. This will also enable clash and design constructability detection as well as increase efficiency. AECOM states this practice helps to “promote better decision-making by leveraging current BIM design practice supported by [its] digital delivery and practice leaders.” Once this work is finished, the lie will connect to Metrolink, Metro G Line, Metro B Line, and Amtrak. Phase 2 of the project also includes a 22-acre maintenance and storage facility as well as improving the street to enhance accessibility. In the facility will be several other buildings equipped with a solar-powered system with “excess power storage capabilities.”

“We are proud to support this landmark project, which will meet growing demands for public transit in the region,” said Matt Crane, chief executive of AECOM’s U.S. West region. “For over a decade, our transportation experts have played a critical role in delivering Southern California’s ambitious transit objectives. That experience prepares our teams to provide innovative engineering solutions that boost connectivity and improve the quality of life for the communities we serve.”

“We are excited to partner with San Fernando Transit Constructors and Metro on this important project to provide new transportation options for communities across the San Fernando Valley,” said Andrew Liu, regional business line leader for U.S. West Transportation. “As the industry’s top rail and mass transit firm, our teams have delivered some of the world’s most ambitious urban mobility projects, and we look forward to deploying that global experience to enhance one of the Valley’s busiest travel corridors.”
