SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. - The BART Board of Directors approved nearly $12 million for investments made to passenger stations to bring them up to a state of good repair.

According to BART, these upgrades are part of its “Glow-Up Strategy,” an initiative that is focused on improving stations to enhance safety. As part of the improvements, crews will add new LED lighting, replace the roof and gutter as necessary to address water intrusion, clean animal droppings, perform landscaping, and remove metal framed bus shelters that contain vandalism and graffiti. The appearance of these stations will be improved, says BART.

Throughout the year, BART says it took additional action to improve stations with deep cleaning and adding additional janitorial staff to increase the cleanliness in the county. Crews spent time at Colma Station repairing floors, benches, and gutters, painting, and removing old equipment such as old phone booths and artwork that could not be salvaged. This work will begin early next year and be completed by the end of 2026.

  • Colma Station: will also receive LED lighting, upgrades to the roof, and removal of the old bus shelter.
  • South San Francisco Station: will also receive LED lighting, upgrades to the roof, cleaning, replacement of the gutter, landscaping, and removal of the old bus shelter.
  • San Bruno Station: will receive LED lighting, upgrades to the roof, the replacement of safety netting to protect people from falling debris, and a specialized deep cleaning of areas that have been hard to reach.
  • Millbrae Station: currently receiving new LED lighting. Crews will also make repairs to the gutter and downspout to address leaking.

“Revitalizing these stations is part of what we like to call the new BART,” said BART Board President Mark Foley. “These upgrades will improve the functional use and aesthetics of our important San Mateo County stations while demonstrating our gratitude and commitment to our continued partnership with the county.”
