BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W) station is now open to the public.

NFTA in Buffalo celebrated the opening of the station with a ribbon-cutting. The video below shows the first passenger train pulling into the station.

While the previous century-old structure was underused, the project sought to stabilize and reuse the trainshed. Crews worked to integrate the trainshed with the nearby Canalside and KeyBank Center to develop a recreational hub, says NFTA. With the station complete, it allows for expanded Metro Rail operations into the Cobblestone District, Canalside, and Old First Ward. This station, NFTA says, is the first extension since the 6.4-mile line opened in 1985. The new schedule for the station can be found here.

During construction, the project also addressed accessibility challenges in the area surrounding the structure. Crews worked to construct boarding platforms, demolish masonry walls, and make improvements to the 2nd floor to furnish a station pathway. On the second floor, NFTA says improvements were made to an estimated 55,000-square feet of outdoor space to support events for more than 2,100 people. In the indoor trainshed area, crews restored windows, lighting, ceilings, and made structural repairs to prepare the space for other improvements. Crews will continue work on the second level of the DL&W which is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

NFTA stated on social media its thanks to “everyone who helped make the opening of DL&W Station a reality, and thank you for joining us for this momentous, historic event.”
