CHICAGO - Metra officials celebrated the rehabilitation of three Metra Electric stations: 79th Street/Chatham, 87th Street/Woodruff, and 103rd Street/Rosemoor.
Over the last two years, Metra has worked to carry out a rehabilitation contract totaling $33.9 million as part of a larger multiyear, multimillion dollar plan that focuses on 13 stations. Each station is now ADA-accessible with new stairs, headhouses, composite deck platforms, lighting, and signage. Additionally, each has street-level entrances and lobbies with elevators. The 79th Street/Chatham station finished in December 2024. 103rd Street/Rosemoor station work finished in March 2025. The 87th Street/Woodruff station reopened October 6. IHC Construction of Elgin was awarded the construction contract and worked to subcontract 30% of the work to DBE firms. Funding for the project came from the Rebuild Illinois capital program.
Separately, 147th St./Sibley Blvd and Homewood Stations were completed in 2024. In June, RT&S reported that work is underway at 95th St./Chicago State University station as part of these accessibility efforts from Metra.
Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski said Metra is “pleased to have completed this work to create modern, accessible, comfortable, and safe new stations for our riders in these communities. . . We want to thank them for their patience and understanding while we carried out this essential work.”
