WASHINGTON, D.C. - Metro has announced it will modernize 27 elevators across more than 12 stations. The first station to receive elevator modernization work is the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Station.

Starting February 10th, crews will begin work at the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Station. On February 17th, they will begin work at Benning Road Station. Work at Dupont Circle Station will start in March. According to the release, each project will take an estimated two and a half to three months to finish. Elevators will be out of service during this window, but passengers with accessibility needs “can still get to these stations via a shuttle at nearby stations.” Additional information for customers with accessibility needs during work at the three first stations can be found here.

The work comes as part of Metro’s regular elevator maintenance program. Crews will improve reliability by replacing and upgrading major components, including “a new passenger cab, controls, motors, and safety devices.” The program includes monthly and annual maintenance on all of Metro’s elevators with subsequent work taking place every ten to fifteen years.

Metro states over the next four years, crews will perform elevator maintenance work at the following stations: Capitol Heights, Courthouse, Gallery Place, Glenmont (Garage), Huntington, Hyattsville Crossing, McPherson Square, Minnesota Avenue (Garage), Mount Vernon, New Carrollton, New Carrollton (Garage), Pentagon City, Rockville, and Wheaton.
