NEW YORK CITY - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) celebrated the groundbreaking of an accessibility project at Middletown Road station.
According to the release, the $57.8 million project included improvements to accessibility and track as well as congestion relief. The station is one of five in ADA Bundle 6 to begin construction. The other stations in Package 6 are Norwood Av, Burnside Av, Myrtle Av, and Avenue I. As of reporting, MTA Construction & Development has completed 38 accessibility projects with another 35 in construction. 19 projects are in the design or procurement phase.
The project is slated to be completed for summer 2027. MLJTC2 JV will serve as the contractor on the project with Mid-American Elevator Co. Inc serving as the elevator manufacturer and installer. Throughout construction, crews will install two new street to platform elevators and two new street to control area stairs. Additionally, crews will make improvements to track, install a new water pipeline, and work on curb extensions on Westchester Avenue.

MTA says in 2020, 13 of the Bronx’s 71 stations were made accessible. Over the last five years, six more have been made accessible, and another nine are in construction. More than 10 are funded in the 2025-2029 Capital Plan, and another four are in “design or procurement thanks to congestion pricing.” Elsewhere in the Bronx, crews are working on the concourse B D tunnel rehabilitation, making structural repairs to the Broadway 1 line, and making resiliency improvements at Westchester Yard.
Additionally, the MTA says Penn Station Access will bring Metro-North to four new stations located in the Bronx: Hunts Point, Parkchester, Morris Park, and Co-op City. This investment, totaling $3 billion, will “expand rail access to hundreds of thousands of residents,” says the MTA. RT&S has also reported on the Second Avenue Subway that will bring benefits to riders in the Bronx.
“Middletown Rd is just one of many accessibility projects coming to the Bronx as part of the new Capital Plan’s unprecedented $10 billion investment in the borough,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “We’re pushing hard to get this work done so all New Yorkers have access to the subway system – this City’s greatest tool for equity and affordability.”
“Today’s groundbreaking is a significant milestone for the MTA as ADA Package 6 is the first bundle of accessibility improvements to unlock funds from congestion pricing,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “Once complete, this station’s two new street-to-platform elevators will strengthen our network of accessible stations not only in Pelham Bay but throughout our transit system.”
