NEW YORK CITY - The MTA announced its Westchester Sq-East Tremont Av (6) Station is now fully accessible.

The MTA completed three elevators at the station, manufactured and installed by Modern Elevator. The contractor is MLJTC2 Joint Venture. This project included one street-to-mezzanine elevator and two mezzanine-to-platform elevators. Crews upgraded platforms, built new staircases, and created new ADA boarding areas, according to the release. It’s now the first station to be made accessible this year. Crews installed lighting and tiles and fixed concrete, steel and paint defects. They also refinished platforms with tactile edge strips for ADA boarding areas. Elsewhere in the station, there is a new fire alarm system, upgraded communication systems, and CCTV cameras. The project cost around $122.5 million, including $98.6 million in federal funds. Around 22% of the project’s budget was awarded to DBE firms.

The station also features new artwork by artist Shervone Neckles. The MTA states “he Land Between Open Water (2024) refers to Snakapins, a large village inhabited by the indigenous Siwanoy population, a band of Munsee-speaking Lenape, who lived for centuries in the area now known as The Bronx.” It was commissioned by the MTA Arts & Design and includes eight painted steel panels that are set in the station’s walls.

“We’re not slowing down when it comes to adding new accessible stations to the subway map in 2025,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “The is MTA’s busiest line, and now thousands of North Bronx seniors, parents with strollers and people with disabilities have full use of the subway and access to jobs, education and everything New York has to offer.”

“Newly accessible stations like Westchester Sq are the fruits of our efforts to deliver projects better, faster, and cheaper,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “The ADA upgrades and state of good repair work we completed here strengthen transit accessibility and improve service reliability for riders both in the Bronx and throughout the entire system.”
