According to OCTA, Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner will resume normal operations on Saturday, June 7th. This follows the completion of initial emergency efforts to stabilize and reinforce the track in various areas along the line.

RT&S has reported on the construction work that began this spring, including placing 5,900 tons of riprap, or large boulders, through the area. In addition to the riprap, OCTA says crews will place 240,000 cubic yards of sand in Areas 1 and 2 between Mariposa Point and North Beach. Crews will also work on “demobilizing equipment, clearing construction staging areas, testing rail signals, and resurfacing and inspecting track.” This work will continue daily between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. before the June 7th reopening of passenger service.

A project team placed large temporary concrete barriers between the track and inland bluff in Area 3. This is to “create a safe workspace for crews to build an approximately 1,400-foot-long catchment wall in the coming months.” The schedule for this project is yet to be announced.

In April, OCTA had submitted a Coastal Development Permit application to the Coastal Commission that was partially approved. On May 7th, additional work was approved. According to the report, the total cost for the work is an estimated $300 million, with the project containing 95% sand and 5% armoring.
