PITTSBURGH - The Downtown light rail tunnels will reopen on Friday, February 28th after PRT announced it has completed its plinth refurbishment project.
According to the report, the project began in 2022 and sought to replace concrete beams. Over the past few years, issues with these beams have prompted service closures. work was part of a larger $150 million Light Rail Transit Investment Program that included “replacing the tracks in the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel and Mt. Lebanon Tunnel.”
Last July, RT&S reported that Pittsburgh Regional Transit had plans to close Mount Washington Transit Tunnel for five months beginning this spring. This is to allow crews to “replace the concrete deck, embed new tracks, replace the electrical catenary wire and structural components, and repair the tunnel lining.” According to the report, the tunnel closed on February 23rd and will remain so until October. Mt. Lebanon Tunnel will be closed from April 2026 to January 2027.
