SAN FRANCISCO – Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has announced a safety initiative in which it would remove fallen trees from trackway during severe weather.

In what BART is calling a “critical preventative maintenance effort”, the new safety initiative program would remove or trim over two hundred trees along service lines. This work is announced before winter weather could bring with it severe storms.

A year ago, “tree failure derailed two trains and delayed train service a minimum of seven times.” Currently, BART has outlined a time table that lists areas that will experience service impacts. The work starts July 23rdin Pleasant Hill-Concord, and the work will continue at various locations before ending November 12th. More work is “expected in 2024 but details are still being finalized.”

During that time, crews will perform maintenance that includes “replacing worn rail, destressing rail so it can better cope with extreme temperatures, brightening stations, and other maintenance projects.”
