SACRAMENTO - Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) was awarded three grants totaling $25.8 million through the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) Round 9 program. Through all of its partnerships and funding, SacRT has secured more than $126 million.
The AHSC Round 9 program is implemented by the California Department of Housing and Community Development and is part of Cap-and-Invest funding that works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve public health, and strengthen the economy.
SacRT says this is “a significant milestone” because it received $1.5 million previously, marking a large increase for this round. The funds will go toward several projects. These include purchasing four new low-floor light rail vehicles to increase its fleet to 63, improving Florin Station on the Blue Line, upgrading transit signals at 33 intersections, and supporting construction at the Sacramento Valley Station (SVS) Transit Center. Separately, the investments support 546 new housing units across three developments along the Blue and Gold lines.
A 348-unit transit-oriented development project in South Sacramento located near Meadowview Light Rail Station includes upgrades made to sidewalks, bikeways, and transit signal priority infrastructure, says SacRT. Additionally, it will add two zero-emission low-floor LRVs on the Blue Line.
SacRT General Manager and CEO Henry Li said, “This funding is a game-changer for our region. . . It allows us to close critical funding gaps, expand our clean transit fleet, and support the kind of walkable, affordable communities that make Sacramento a sustainable and inclusive place to live.”
