CHICAGO - Construction on the new State/Lake Loop Elevated station in downtown Chicago will begin on January 5, 2026.
The CDOT and CTA announced the upcoming construction on December 4. Starting January 5 next year, the station will close ahead of demolition and major construction activities. This new station will reportedly replace one of the oldest stations. The new structure will allow for better accessibility with ADA-accessible elevators, a glass canopy, wider platforms, and better lighting for visibility. CTA says the station is slated to open in 2029.

The original structure was built in 1895, and as such, is in need of repair to bring it to accessibility standards. In addition to the improvements listed above, crews will also remove columns in the intersection to improve vehicular safety and improve sidewalk crossings with bump-outs for pedestrian safety. Crews will work from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for heavy excavation and concrete removal during the day. Night time working hours from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. will allow for decommissioning and demolition of the station.
Service impacts for passengers are detailed on CTA’s website.
