NEW YORK CITY - The MTA announced three modernized elevators are now open at the Queens Plaza EMR Subway Station.

These elevators are part of the MTA’s accessibility and safety upgrade efforts, according to the release. These will help to reduce necessary repairs and disruptions later on. The project was made possible by the FTA’s support.

The work included crews completing a full replacement of the cab and equipment within the cab, shaft, and pit. This also includes two new elevator head houses located at street level. Crews also made modifications to the shaft and pit as needed to allow for new equipment. The elevator machine room and electrical and mechanical equipment received replacements and other modernization efforts for reliability. The remote monitoring equipment, intercom system, and cameras also received upgrades to “allow crews to respond more quickly and precisely if an elevator goes out of service.”

MTA Construction and Development President Jamie Torres-Springer said, “We’re proud to complete another on-budget project to deliver more modern, reliable elevator service at Queens Plaza. . . We’re moving at an unprecedented pace toward our goal of making public transit for all New Yorkers.”

MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo said, “Nearly 10,000 riders use the Queens Plaza station on an average weekday, and modernized elevators provide them with reliable access to our entire system. . . By scheduling replacement outages, we can keep customers informed and avoid unplanned inconveniences.”
