WATSONVILLE, Calif. - Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) awarded a $24 million contract to Granite for the Perris South Metrolink Station and Layover Facility Project.
Granite is a full-suite civil construction provider. The project seeks to improve reliability and address the increased demand along SR91/Perris Valley Line in Riverside County, California. The $24 million in funds will be sourced locally, according to the press release. Currently, the station operates as a single-track terminus. This has limited service and created bottlenecks, necessitating the project. Crews will convert the station into a “high-capacity, flexible hub” that supports the growing demand. Construction is anticipated to begin early 2026 and last until 2028.
As part of the project, crews will add a second boarding platform and 1,100-1,200 feet of station track. This will allow two trains to load and unload at the same time. Crews will also lengthen the existing platform to allow for eight-car trains and perform upgrades that include emergency phones, electronic displays, and canopies.
A new at-grade crossing with warning gates and flashing lights will be added to the second platform. A fourth layover track and switching infrastructure will be added to the Layover Facility to allow more trains to be stored overnight and therefore improve operations.
“This project builds on our successful partnership with RCTC and Metrolink and leverages Granite’s core strengths in heavy civil construction and rail,” said Granite Vice President of Regional Operations, Bill Moore. “With our recent completion of a comparable project only 13 miles away at March Field Station in Moreno Valley, we are uniquely equipped to address the expanding commuter rail requirements of the region.”
