CHICAGO – Metra announced Milwaukee Avenue will be closed at Kilbourn Avenue until June 2024 as part of their bridge replacement project.

In a news release, Metra announced Milwaukee Avenue will be closed at Kilbourn Avenue until June 2024. This comes as part of a project to “replace the bridge over the roadway and rebuild the nearby Grayland Station.” Originally, the road was only supposed to be closed until December of this year, but the date was extended due to delays and preparing for winter weather.

The project will replace a 123-year-old bridge that is located on the Milwaukee District North Line. Additionally, Grayland Station (located south of the bridge) will also be rebuilt with “longer platforms, new public address equipment, visual information signs, shelters with on-demand heat on each side, new lighting and new stairs and ramps, making it fully ADA-compliant.” The project is estimated to cost $36.1 million.

Metra has also stated that “southeast-bound vehicular traffic on Milwaukee Avenue is rerouted south on Cicero Avenue and east on Addison Street back to Milwaukee Avenue.” Traffic, both bike and pedestrian, are rerouted along Addison and Kilbourn.
