TORONTO – Metrolinx announced crews are working to expand bridges and build retaining walls to make room for overhead line electrification and a fourth track on its Lakeshore East Line.

In a Metrolinx news release, it announced crews are working to expand bridges and build retaining walls to make room for overhead line electrification and a fourth track on its Lakeshore East Line.

The construction is taking place at Danforth and Warden bridges where crews are working to widen the structures to allow for a future fourth track. Metrolinx says this will increase train service in both directions. Afterward, it says it will “start piling to build bridge abutments on either side of the roads.” Drilled piling will create a hole wherein crews can “insert H-pile steel into the hole and push it into the ground using a method similar to hammering. These abutments with the pier structure in the middle of the road will support the steel beam girders and the bridge deck on top.”

Pedestrian access won’t be affected, and the corridor can be accessed from the main roads with minimal traffic impacts. Metrolinx gave advance notice to the surrounding community regarding noise and vibrations which can be found here.
