SAN JOSE, Calif. - VTA continues work on phase II of its BART Silicon Valley Extension Program.
In Phase II, VTA says it is currently in design and engineering. This phase will extend service from the Berryessa Transit Center to stations at 28th Street/Little Portugal, Downtown San José, and Diridon Station.
Throughout 2025, VTA reached “key milestones” that have set up advancement in 2026. This includes expanded construction activity and tunneling preparations. Last year, VTA secured $100 million in state funds for the project, confirmed its choice for a single-bore tunnel method, and procured the tunnel boring machine (TBM).
“2025 was about building the foundation,” said Tom Maguire, VTA’s Chief Megaprojects Delivery Officer. “That work allows us to accelerate toward major construction and keep this critical regional project moving forward in 2026.”
Now, VTA states more than 70% of the tunnel launch structure walls are complete at Newhall Yard. This also includes the Caterpillar Shaft, also known as the deepest part of the structure. In 2026, VTA will continue its work constructing the tunnel launch structure with utility relocations and staging-area development early construction activities.
