PHILADELPHIA - Along the 14.2-mile main line, crews are working overnight to perform rail grinding and profiling as part of PATCO's maintenance program.

According to the release, this work includes precision grinding of PATCO’s interlocking, the sections that allow trains to cross from one track to the other. The project, totaling $1.34 million, will be completed during overnight shifts as crews were able to work with no impact to service.

By utilizing an overnight “owl” service suspension, Delaware River Port Authority says crews have an extended window to focus on both tracks at the same time. Because of the extra time, crews are able to perform detailed rail grinding, cleaning, and inspections overnight. The work follows PATCO’s previous work in 2019 and 2023.

“Rail grinding extends the life of our rails and track components, improves how wheels and tracks interact, prevents premature rail failures, and reduces wear on our train car wheels,” said John D. Rink, PATCO General Manager.
