FORT OGDEN, Fla. - Seminole Gulf Railway has started renewing 11.5 miles of track.

Located between Fort Ogden in DeSoto County and Cleveland in Charlotte County, Seminole Gulf Railway is making an $18.2 million upgrade to support heavier train loads and higher track speeds. According to Seminole Gulf Railway, this work will take 18 months to complete. These upgrades are funded with a $9.6 million Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety (CRISI) program grant and $4.3 million from Florida DOT District 1. Additionally, SGLR says it is financing the rest of the $18.2 million needed to complete the project.

Crews will reportedly replace decayed timber ties with steel ties and install heavy weight rail as a way to increase reliability and resiliency in the current environment. The upgrades will help to lessen overall maintenance costs.
