The proposed commuter line in Triangle, N.C., would serve an estimated 12,000 people a day.

With 750,000 people expected to move to the Triangle in North Carolina over the next 20 years, more needs to be done in terms of movement.

Go Triangle is currently executing a feasibility study of a proposed commuter rail that has been talked about for years. It is estimated that 12,000 people will ride the 43-mile commuter rail system each day. There was talk of a light-rail line, but Duke University killed the idea.

The Go Triangle study is looking into using an existing railroad corridor owned by the North Carolina Railroad Company, building an entirely new line, or using a combination of both. Negotiations with Norfolk Southern and Amtrak are ongoing.

The study is expected to be finished by May, and if communities agree to move forward a line could be in service by 2030.
