YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Ohio Rail Commission has approved the creation of a new railyard in Youngstown.

The railyard project funding total is $2,915,232.40. Part of Midwest & Bluegrass Rail, the Youngstown and Southeastern Railroad (YSSR) – Lansingville Yard will create a large-scale yard as the result of a $1.5 million grant. This is in conjunction with another $1.5 million from the railroad, according to a report from WFMJ. Located near Poland Avenue, the property is owned by Midwest & Bluegrass Rail.

Crews will construct 15,000 feet of track with six turnouts. Once the project is completed, the rail yard will house items in transit operation, “with a 5-yard track to be constructed with a capacity for up to 220 cars.”

The Ohio Rail Commission approved its funding for the project and stated that the new rail yard “will allow the railroad to place and retrieve railcars more efficiently,” according to the Tribune Chronicle. As of reporting, the grading work and construction of two yard tracks is already underway “and to be completed separately from the new rail yard project.”
