NEW WESTMINSTER, British Columbia - TransLink will replace all of the original elevators on its Expo Line.

Most of the elevators on the Line are from the opening of SkyTrain back in 1985, according to TransLink. As part of the Expo Line Elevator Replacement Program, it will replace 21 elevators across 15 stations as part of its efforts to improve accessibility. These new elevators will have more room for mobility devices and bikes, be more resilient in warm weather, and require less downtime for routine maintenance. The investment, totaling $32 million, was approved by the Mayors’ Council as part of Phase 2 of the Mayors’ 10-Year Vision. This has partial funding from the Canada Community Building Fund, or CCBF.

Currently, two elevator replacements are underway at Nanaimo and 22nd Street stations. TransLink states each will take around 4 months to complete, and these elevators will be replaced “a few at a time” to reduce disruptions. The program follows its recent replacement of 37 escalators on the Expo Line.

TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn stated, “By replacing our elevators from the 1980s, we are taking customer experiences to new heights. These new elevators will make transit more reliable and accessible for those traveling with mobility devices, bicycles, strollers, or luggage.”
