BNSF Begins Repairing Bridge That Collapsed in June 2024

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - BNSF will begin repairing a rail bridge that collapsed last summer in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
On June 23, 2024, BNSF suffered a bridge collapse after days of heat, rain, and flooding. Over the Big Sioux River, the center span of BNSF’s Aberdeen Subdivision bridge collapsed. This subsequently disrupted traffic for the Class I.

In July, RT&S reported BNSF was working to remove debris. The work had to be completed with the Army Corps “because the bridge is located near a federal levee.” Additionally, BNSF would need to acquire an Army Corps permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act if that work includes using fill on a bank. Moreover, any construction that necessitates any changes to the original structure would also require a permit.
Now, according to a report from Keloland, BNSF crews will begin working overnight shifts to replace the collapsed bridge. Completion of the bridge repairs is scheduled in July.
