DARBY, Pa. - CSX completed a replacement of the Darby Diamond in Pennsylvania.

According to the Class I, the Darby Diamond is an intersection where two transit lines, a four-lane highway, and freight rail meet. The crossing is challenging due to the traffic and different track gauges between CSX and SEPTA. CSX utilizes standard gauge, while SEPTA uses Pennsylvania gauge, “creating a flange-bearing crossing for the trolleys.”

Beginning October 29, crews worked to remove the old crossing and install a new diamond with concrete panels. SEPTA, CSX, the Borough of Darby, and the State of Pennsylvania coordinated work on the project. CSX says the Darby Diamond is replaced every five to seven years due to use and its complexity.

CSX Senior Track Supervisor Peter Cooper said, “The success of the project relied on conducting thorough daily job briefings, making sure we had the right equipment and materials ready, and having trust in our craft employees.”
