ATLANTA –– Norfolk Southern announced this week that it has launched the Landmark Series, a new lineup of locomotives that will operate in revenue freight service as well as lead the company's business trains.
The locomotives in this series will carry the name of a city that has shaped America’s story and Norfolk Southern’s heritage.
John Orr, Norfolk Southern’s Chief Operating Officer, says “These locomotives aren’t just machines — they’re growth engines for the U.S. economy. Each city we highlight is a center of economic activity that strengthens our network and drives commerce across the nation.”
The new locomotive paint schemes are the work and craftsmanship of the NS team in Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pa. The railroad views these engines as not just equipment, but as rolling tributes to the communities that keep America moving forward.

The first two in the series, Birmingham and Atlanta, (two former Southern Railway locations) are now traveling the NS network. NS says these engines are “marking the start of a journey that celebrates connection, progress and the people who make it possible.”
