EDMONTON, Alberta –– Cando Rail & Terminals announced this week the opening of the Cando Southlands Rail Yard in Strathcona County, Alberta. The terminal will provide rail capacity to serve Imperial’s Strathcona refinery, which is adjacent to the new terminal, as well as other area customers.

Now that the terminal is complete, Cando will perform rail operations at both the Cando Southlands Rail Yard and Imperial’s Strathcona refinery.

Imperial is currently constructing Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility at its Strathcona refinery. Imperial will use locally sourced feedstocks, such as canola oil, which will be transported to the site by rail. The rail terminal supports Imperial’s rail needs associated with the new renewable diesel facility.

The rail terminal adds more than 600 additional operational and railcar storage spaces, utilizing both loop and ladder tracks to connect to both of Canada’s Class I railways and, ultimately, to customers throughout the greater North American rail network.

“This is a very exciting day for Cando Rail & Terminals. We have been providing rail service to Imperial for more than 25 years. To be able to provide longstanding customers with increased rail capacity and create supply chain efficiencies is a real thrill. We would like to sincerely thank everyone that has played a role.” – Brian Cornick, President & CEO, Cando Rail & Terminals

“We are excited to leverage the Southlands Rail Yard to debottleneck our logistics operations in Western Canada, support local Canadian renewable diesel production and maximize output from our existing refining assets well into the future. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Cando Rail & Terminals in our ongoing goal to provide the fuel products Canadians need.” – Scott Maloney, Canada Fuels Manager, Imperial.
