Metrolinx Tackles Union Station Enhancement Project at Toronto Transit Hub

Metrolinx recently held an informational event for GO Transit commuters at Union Station where event attendees were able to view a 3D model of the future south concourse.

As part of the Metrolinx GO Expansion, the agency has announced it is finishing work at Union Station to bring two-way, all-day rail service every 15 minutes or less along core sections of the GO network.
The latest Union Station Enhancement Project improvements include wider GO train platforms with canopies and new tracks, which the agency expects will boost service levels across the network as trains move through the station more efficiently.
“Union Station is the gateway to the region and is undergoing modernization while preserving heritage features to meet transit needs now, and in the future,” Metrolinx states on its website. “All this to expand capacity and run more trains through the largest transit hub in the GO rail system and bring frequent, all-day, transit on core segments of the network.”
Metrolinx has also added more stairs and elevators to access platforms faster and easier, the agency said. A new south passenger concourse spanning from Bay to York Streets has also been added, with open-concept connections into the York, VIA, and Bay Concourses, Union Square and Scotiabank Arena.
Members of the project team were on hand to answer questions about the project and explain how the improvements will benefit GO Transit commuters at a recent customer appreciation event held at the station, a release said.
Through virtual reality technology, event attendees were able to view a 3D model of the future south concourse and navigate the new platforms planned as part of the project.
